It was only fitting that my first recipe on here be something that I make myself just about every single day – my protein “milkshake!”
Now I know what you’re thinking. “Healthy” and “milkshake” in the same sentence is rather counterintuitive. And despite me calling this a milkshake, it is in fact not a traditional milkshake. As much as I’d love to throw a dollop of Handels ice cream in, we’re keeping this far lighter and healthier.
So why then do I call it a “milkshake”? Because of the TEXTURE! It’s thick, creamy, sweet & cool – just like the classic indulgent treat. The best way I can describe it is if your protein smoothie turned into a milkshake/ soft serve hybrid. The final result? All the benefits of a clean protein smoothie with the taste of a decadent dessert. It’s a win/ win!
A major philosophy in all my cooking and food prep is to use as clean and minimally processed ingredients as possible. I’m all for knowing exactly what is in my food and – as in, no weird, science experiment sounding ingredients in my grub, please!
What I love about this recipe is that it’s so simple. Just five ingredients – that’s it! And if we want to get even more granular, the ingredients within each ingredient are clean as well. With the exception of the single ingredient items (banana & ice), each recommended item below also has a clean, straightforward formula.
Now, the protein powder that you go with is huge. This can make or break this recipe, so it’s vital that you go with a clean, good quality blend. I adore Ballerina Farm’s Farmer Protein and switch between their Vanilla Bean and Maple Cinnamon flavors.
1 frozen banana
Ice
1 tbsp creamy almond butter – my favorite is this one from Once Again!
1 and a half scoops of Ballerina Farm’s protein powder. I
About 6 fl oz almond milk – I use the unsweetened vanilla flavor from Malk
